  1. Hey Guys! Hope most of you were able to log on. Today our postings will be based on the recent events which are taking place around the world. Most of you guys should have heard about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. If not, you should really do some research as we can also experience earthquakes here.
Anyway, what is your view on events such as earthquakes? Do you think we are prepared in St. Lucia for such a disaster? What would you do if you felt the earth shaking beneath you? And can someone please explain what causes earthquakes?

  2. i feelin very sad when a event lyk an earthquake .
Nop...i don't think that St.Lucia is readii 4 an earthquake.
If i felt an earthquake right this minutei wud run up the nearest hill becuz an earthquake can cause a tsunamii.
An earthquake happens wen two plates knock 2gether n the earth vibrates. =)

  3. Thanks for your input Jojo. I believe I would get to any open area free of buildings or any structure that may fall on me. Are you aware that the earthquake has caused great concern on the nuclear power stations in Japan? What do you know about nuclear power stations? Encourage your peers to post their thoughts on this topic.

  4. yea boi me2 if a earth quake happen i climbin d talest coconut tree cuz a earth quake cun cause a tsunami ee buh lol anywayzz an earth quake is cause wen d 2 plates unda d earth knok 2geda

  5. lol I don't think you would be safe on a coconut tree because those waves can even carry the coconut tree away. You need to have a look at the videos of the tsunami in Japan so you can have an idea as to how massive the wave is. Thanks for your input, glad to have you on our blog.

  6. well eh wen i hear earthquake i does get afraid.i dont think st.lucia is ready for an earthquake uh.u see if a earthquake happen im leaving the house or building i in an i going an find higher grounds because the house or building can fall on me n i have alot of things to do before i die lol.anyways an earthquake is formed wen plates beneath the earth rub together.

  10. oh and the latest news on the power plant is.............Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, where reactor cooling systems were disabled following the massive earthquake and tsunami on 11 March.Black smoke was seen emerging from the Unit 3 reactor building, spurring the temporary evacuation of workers from Units 3 and 4. The emission of smoke has now decreased significantly. At Units 5 and 6, workers have successfully restored off-site power to the reactor, which had previously reached a safe, cold shutdown status

thats the latest i have found on d power plants

  11. Thank you fat joe for the latest on the nuclear power plant?
But do you guys know the effects an explosion of a nuclear power plant can have on the people in Japan? When a nuclear plant explodes, alot of radiation is released. CAn any of you guys give us some information on the effects that radiation has on our different body system?

  13. no i doh fink st.lucia iz ready for an earthquake and if there is one i would go under a table and cry...and if there was a tsunami i would go on the roof(allica)

  14. oh and the cause of an earthquake is when the plates knock each other it causes the ground to shake

  16. we are not ready for an earthquake, if we are hit by one we are done for.
The cuase of an earthquake is when two plates slide past each other.

  17. well miss um radiation on our body can cause our hair tu fall out umm mke mus die but slowly i tink umm thats all i no for now :P lool

  18. uh das d latest on d ting i get so far

    (1) Hair
The losing of hair quickly and in clumps occurs with radiation exposure at 200 rems or higher.

    (2) Brain
Since brain cells do not reproduce, they won't be damaged directly unless the exposure is 5,000 rems or greater. Like the heart, radiation kills nerve cells and small blood vessels, and can cause seizures and immediate death.

    (3) Thyroid
The certain body parts are more specifically affected by exposure to different types of radiation sources. The thyroid gland is susceptible to radioactive iodine. In sufficient amounts, radioactive iodine can destroy all or part of the thyroid. By taking potassium iodide, one can reduce the effects of exposure.

    (4) Blood System
When a person is exposed to around 100 rems, the blood's lymphocyte cell count will be reduced, leaving the victim more susceptible to infection. This is often refered to as mild radiation sickness. Early symptoms of radiation sickness mimic those of flu and may go unnoticed unless a blood count is done.According to data from Hiroshima and Nagaski, show that symptoms may persist for up to 10 years and may also have an increased long-term risk for leukemia and lymphoma.

    (5) Heart
Intense exposure to radioactive material at 1,000 to 5,000 rems would do immediate damage to small blood vessels and probably cause heart failure and death directly.

    (6) Gastrointestinal Tract
Radiation damage to the intestinal tract lining will cause nausea, bloody vomiting and diarrhea. This is occurs when the victim's exposure is 200 rems or more. The radiation will begin to destroy the cells in the body that divide rapidly. These including blood, GI tract, reproductive and hair cells, and harms their DNA and RNA of surviving cells.

    (7) Reproductive Tract
Because reproductive tract cells divide rapidly, these areas of the body can be damaged at rem levels as low as 200. Long-term, some radiation sickness victims will become sterile

Nuclear Radiation Effects On Human Body

Nuclear reactor Explosion in Fukoshima Japan recently was horrible. Images of nuclear radiation still haunts millions of people who were surrounding Japan.

But do you know the effects of radiation on the human body? Here are a few:

    - Brain, nerve cells or neurons and blood vessels of the brain at risk of death and cause seizures.
    - Eye, radiation exposure can increase the risk of cataracts.
    - Thyroid, when the nuclear reactor was down, radioactive iodine (I-131) released into the atmosphere. Tues human thyroid is very sensitive to the compound of iodine (I-131) so that can cause thyroid cancer or overactive thyroid gland.
    - Lung, when you breathe in nuclear particle then you risk suffering from lung cancer.
    - Heart, high doses of radiation can damage cells of cardiac blood vessels and lower heart function.
    - Digestion, sensitive cells in the gastrointestinal tract can be damaged, causing nausea, vomiting blood and dysentery.
    - Reproductive Organs, cleavage egg cells and sperm can be susceptible to interference and death causing sterility.
    - Skin, cleavage of skin cells become disturbed so that the skin looks like burnt.
    - Lymph System, radiation causes impaired lymph cell division so that cells are damaged and cause impaired immune systems.

Hopefully we do not experience it.

  23. Thank you anika and fat joe for your info on the effects of radiation on the human body. Since we have completed Human body systems and many of ur questions could not be answered during class time. Feel free to post any questions you may have on the blog.
